I think it’s finally time that I do a “Things to do in” for my Atlanta neighborhood. I love the charm that Midtown has to offer and there is always something fun to do in the area.
Where to Explore…
One of the must-explore areas of Midtown is definitely Piedmont Park. I live so close to the park and I love to walk around the grounds after work when it’s nice outside. The park is host to practically every Midtown concert and festival (which sometimes sucks for parking/traffic) which makes it super easy to see a show or mosey through an art fest.
Piedmont Park is also home to the pool where I get my tan on. The pool is closed for the season now but it has cheap admission. I normally bring a couple magazines, pack some snacks and grab some Starbucks on the way when I wanted to lay out.
The park has a Green Market every Saturday morning. The Green Market has tons of fresh fruit and veggie vendors, fresh eggs, spices, yummy Iced Coffee and other prepared foods. The market also has cooking classes and other cool things, like pumpkin carving.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden makes its home in the park and it’s amazing. During the Holidays, they have over a million Christmas lights. You should definitely visit if you’re in Atlanta in December. They also host Cocktails in the Garden on most Thursday so you can sip and peruse the grounds. I might be going tomorrow for their Fest of Ale event.
After exploring the park, make your way to the High Museum of Art. The High has a great permanent collection with lots of Impressionistic and neo-classical pieces. The High just finished it’s Dutch masters special collection, which was when I went and it was fantastic. I went during Fulton-Free Saturdays but tickets aren’t too pricey for a museum and they have half price happy hour specials on Thursdays.
Where to Eat…
The Midtown neighborhood of Atlanta has some great spots to dine. I’m always looking to try a new place. One of my first Midtown eateries since moving here was Einstein’s and it sure delivered. Einstein’s is one, not the bagel shop and two super delicious. I’ve been for both dinner and brunch on multiple occasions. Everything I’ve had has been good. They also have a great patio for people watching.
Another one of my favorite places in Midtown is Tin Lizzy’s Cantina. Tin Lizzy’s and I have a love/love relationship and, safe to say, it’s my favorite restaurant in Atlanta. The prices are super affordable, the margs are strong and the chips are addicting. Trust me and go when you’re in town! They have tons of locations all over the ATL.
One of my first bites of Atlanta came from Mary Mac’s Tea Room and it was great. Mary Macs is your standard southern meat and three restaurant and it’s a staple in Atlanta. As a sorority officer, I went with my chapter during a meeting. It’s our tradition and I think many other Atlanta residents have their own Mary Mac’s traditions. If you go, order some sweet tea or an Arnold Palmer, fried chicken, tomato pie, mac and cheese and collards then thank me later. Also save room for their quintessential southern desserts!
Where to Drink…
I’m starting to think that Park Tavern is THE place to drink in Midtown. If there is a festival in the park, people flock to Park Tavern. They brew their own beer (which is only ok- get SweetWater for an Atlanta touch) and they have great specials. When it’s raining, they have $1 drafts! #Score! Park Tavern is also super close to my house so that’s always a plus!
I’m not sure if SweetWater Brewery counts as Midtown or not but for the sake of this post it does. If you’re visiting Atlanta, you MUST go to SweetWater! They give tours and tastings a few days a week and for $10 you get a glass pint glass and 6 beer tickets to drink until your heart’s content. The brewery itself is super cool and they have a great outdoor patio normally with live music and cute dogs.
Ri Ra Pub and Flip Flops are pretty close to each other and that street is a great area to bar hop (it’s also where the Tin Lizzy’s is). If you’re visiting with a group you’re sure to have fun here! There also is this thing called Midtown Fridays but I’ve never been to it.
All in All…
Midtown is such a fun place to live. It is close to Buckhead, Virginia Highlands, Little 5 Points and the heart of the city but it has its own charm. There’s great things to explore with yummy food and fun night life. I love walking around the park and seeing what the hipsters will do next!
